Nelvin & Justin's Honey Bee Learning Story

Learning Observed

During iExperience in Week 5, the learners were able to opt in to Sustainability related sessions. Justin and Nelvin chose to learn more about Honey Bees and why it is necessary to care for them on a global scale. They learned about reasons why global bee populations are decreasing and how this connects to the foods we eat. We also looked at the products that bees provide for us e.g. honey. There were 10 bee related challenges that the learners could choose from. All of the activities required them to demonstrate curiosity. One challenge was to use a recipe that included honey as an ingredient. We made Crunchy Banana Pops. Justin and Nelvin had to cover a frozen banana with honey and then roll it in Rice Bubbles and sprinkles. Afterwards, they gave their Crunchy Banana Pop a rating out of 10 and discussed reasons for this.

Consider undertaking an iExplore to do with planting a bee friendly garden to help increase the number of bees in our school environment. Alternatively, look at how you could plant bee friendly plants at home. Make Crunchy Banana Pops at home using different toppings - describe how bees helped make the ingredients.

Nelvin's Speech Learning Story

Learning Observed

This term all learners in Learning Habitat 1 had to deliver a speech or a poem. As Nelvin is Year 5, he had to compose and present a speech. He chose to do his speech on War and how it affects us negatively. It is a nerve wracking thing to stand and deliver a speech to an audience of peers, but Nelvin showed he had confidence. I was impressed to hear Nelvin confidently present his speech as it was very well informed. He had practised a lot and was able to recall precise facts from his memory!

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Nelvin was assessed against all four of our Ormiston Primary Vision Principles. He was able to best demonstrate being connected to the audience by mostly using a clear voice with plenty of eye contact, capable by being able so knowledgeable about the topic and curious by selecting a topic that he was so incredibly passionate about.

Next Learning Steps

Practise in front of a mirror to work on eye contact and volume of voice. Video yourself and watch to self-assess. Seek feedback from other learners during planning and writing stages in order to increase collaboration.

Mihi Learning Story - August 2015

Learning Observed

This term our overarching theme has been collaboration and Nelvin has had plenty of opportunities to show how collaborative he is and to grow his collaboration capability.  To kick the term off Nelvin was on a team of learners who had to collaborate to complete various challenges.  During Maori Language week the learners rotated through different experiences to extend their knowledge of Maori words and phrases. Nelvin was able to practice  vocabulary of animals in Maori using an online game. He also began to think about his digital mihi and visited his Learning Pathway.  He still needs to show his learning of the words and phrases by applying them his own mihi. Nelvin would approach the Learning Coach to ask questions and clarify ideas and had fun playing the animal game.

Nelvin was enthusiastically engaged in all aspects of the lesson participating and contributing while demonstrating strong collaboration with others. At times, he asked for help and didn’t hesitate to check for understanding with other learners. During the animal activity I observed some good questioning and problem solving strategies eg. some animals sound the same in English and Maori. As his mihi is not complete he will need to persevere to get it done to show a strong desire to develop his capability in this area. He is able to make connections to what should be in his digital mihi in Maori- drawing on new learning and prior knowledge.

Tallest Tower Technology Challenge - Learning Story - August 2015

Justin V and Nelvin were 2 of four learners who initially showed interest in representing OrmPS at a technology challenge at Point View Primary School on August 26.  They met each Friday for a new challenge.  Their first challenge was to make the tallest free-standing tower they could using only the materials they were provided with:  5 sheets of paper, 6 straws, 30cm tape, 2 pipe cleaners, a couple of popsicle sticks and their imagination.  There was a time limit and they were up against the girls!  Justin and Nelvin strategised together before they started building showing some fantastic problem solving and an ability to pre-plan.  They also made adjustments as they went demonstrating that they were resilient and could respond as needed.  They used the materials wisely and kept the brief at the forefront- being victorious in the end!

Justin and Nelvin participated and contributed enthusiastically, relating well to each other and managing themselves.  They used strong thinking strategies to maximize the use of their materials to strengthen and heighten their tower.  They collaborated strongly demonstrating an ability to listen to each other and communicate.  Their curiosity was evident in their design and as they won they developed their capability at technology challenges.
